Guidelines and Proposed Actions for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Physiotherapy in Finland

Artificial intelligence offers new opportunities for physiotherapy, but making effective use of it requires expertise, shared practices, and an understanding of AI’s potential, limitations, and responsible use.

Recommendations and proposed actions for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in physiotherapy brings together research-based recommendations for the controlled, responsible, and effective use of AI in physiotherapy.

The publication provides practical recommendations for the use of AI in clinical practice and management, as well as in education and research, development and innovation activities. It also addresses AI-related regulation, quality management, and the responsibilities and obligations of different stakeholders.

For organisations, the publication provides proposed actions for areas such as developing their own AI guidelines and strengthening AI-related competencies. At the societal level, the proposals highlight national development needs for promoting the responsible use of AI in physiotherapy.

The research project was conducted by the University of Jyväskylä in collaboration with the Finnish Association of Physiotherapists. The project was funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund, and its findings are based on a literature review, a survey, interviews, and a Delfoi expert panel.
