Pernille Thomsen has specialized in treating the somatic aspect of children in distress. Pernille is a Danish physiotherapist, holds a master’s degree in health education, and has taught at the physiotherapy education program for 13 years. She has specialized in the neurophysiological consequences of an overloaded nervous system and published the bestseller *Children’s Mental Health When the Nervous System is Overworked* in 2022 with Gads Forlag. In 2023, she also released the book *Well-being and Health for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities*. She has developed courses, given lectures, taught, and supervised physiotherapists, occupational therapists, educators, teachers, health visitors, and others on the neurophysiology behind an overloaded nervous system and how, through physical activity, touch, and breathing, we can calm an overworked nervous system. She has taught in Denmark, England, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Switzerland. In her daily practice at the clinic in Bagsværd, she treats children with autism, ADHD, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, and others showing symptoms of an overloaded nervous system. In this course, we go through the fundamental challenges faced by children and adolescents, focusing on the bio-psycho-social perspective. We cover brain anatomy and physiology, as well as the neurophysiological factors that influence them. Additionally, we explore how physical activity, breathing exercises, and deep calming pressure can support well-being.
